THOMAS RYAN

I started riding at the age of four at the Tipperary Equestrian Centre in Co. Tipperary, Ireland.  I would go there once a week for a riding lesson on the school horses.  At the age of eight my mother bought me my first pony and it was then that I developed an interest to branch into the sport.  By the age of ten I was competing ponies for Tipperary Equestrian Centre and for local owners, sometimes having up to twelve ponies in competition on various weekends.  I stayed and competed ponies and after horses at the Tipperary Equestrian Centre until the age of sixteen.

My first real job with horses started after I got an offer to ride for Kedrah House Stud in Ireland.  The stud only had home bred competition horses from all of their own stallions.  I started with a string of fourteen tree and four year old horses which I had to break in myself and train to make ready for the upcoming jumping season.  It was a great opportunity to learn about young horses and how much work is involved before they ever get to the higher end of the sport.  I stayed at Kedrah House Stud for 6 months and then got an offer to move to Stockholm, Sweden to train and work with Irish international rider John Hickey.

I started work at John`s stable in January 2004 and was immediately given a string of horses that ranged from four years up to Grand Prix horses.  This is where I got my first real taste of the International scene.  I travelled with John every weekend to national and international shows all over Sweden and Europe,  picking up  great experience and numerous Grand Prix wins and placing on the young rider circuit.  In November 2005 I was approached by a scout from an English agency looking for a rider to go to Switzerland to ride for Stall Optimum Horses.

In January 2006, I started my new job with Optimum horses.  I was now for the first time, top rider of a big international stable.  Over the next four years I travelled to all the biggest shows around Europe and made my first appearance with the Irish national team.  In 2006 I was selected to compete for the Irish young rider team at the European Championships in Athens.  After this I also got my first start with the Irish senior team in Zagreb, Croatia.  I got my first Super League start in 2008 at the Super League Finals in Barcelona where I jumped a 4/4 and helped secure Ireland’s place in next year’s League.  After this I was voted Ireland’s 2008 Rookie of the year.  In 2009 I jumped my first World Cup in Zurich, and was also selected to return home to compete at the five star Dublin horse show, which is the dream of all Irish riders.  Dublin was a great show for me and a double clear in the Grand Prix earned me a place on the Irish team, as the youngest rider at the senior European Championships in Windsor Castle, Great Britain.

At the end of 2009 I decided to go out on my own and started riding horses for various owners.  Most of which were young horses that I have been bringing up to Grand Prix level over the last few years.  My goals over the next years are to bring these horses successfully to championship level and to move into the top thirty in the FEI world ranking list.
